Booster pump

Significant population growth, as well as the country’s hot and dry climate and successive droughts in recent years, have posed serious challenges to water supply, transmission and water supply systems. In this situation, providing and creating an acceptable level of water pressure in different parts of the country is of particular importance. Currently, the use of pumps and booster pumps are a solution to solve these challenges in different areas of the city, such as multi-storey buildings, commercial units, industrial estates, etc.


What is a pump booster?

When ordinary pump is unable to provide an acceptable flow rate and pressure; The only solution left is to use booster pumps.  booster pump is a system consisting of one or more pumps that work in parallel with each other. this system with feedback sensors and constant or variable speed control of motors try to supply and control the required flow and head with the least amount of energy and the highest efficiency.

Mechanism of the booster pumps is such that the pumps enter the circuit according to the amount of pressure required by the system.For example: when all consumers are using water in different parts, the peak consumption will be detected for the booster pump and it will put all the pumps into the circuit and vice versa when water consumption is reduced; the booster pump system will put fewer pumps into the circuit.

Booster pumps, regardless of the type of use, number of pumps, working pressure, etc., are divided into two categories: “fixed speed” and “variable speed”. Fixed speed booster pumps are used in different types of single pump, two or more pumps with jockey pump or without jockey pump.

The main parts of a fixed speed booster pump are main chassis, electric pumps, drive manifold, suction manifold, pressure control equipment, valves and control panel. Of course, it should be noted that by adding several pressure sensors and some equipment such as PLC or Drive, the fixed speed booster pump can be upgraded to variable speed.

The performance of fixed speed booster pumps is generally zero and one, that’s mean when the minimum pressure condition is detected by pressure sensors, the pumps enter the circuit with full power immediately and until the desired pressure is reached, that’s mean when Pressure sensor to report maximum pressure status, they are working and then they turn off and so on and off the circuit.

Variable speed booster pumps Unlike fixed speed booster pumps Which the pumps are switched on and off momentarily and hard; Using the drive, they turn on and off softly and enter and exit the circuit alternately. That is, according to the amount of water pressure required by the system, the drive feeds the pumps with a certain frequency. The control circuit of variable speed booster pumps is simpler than that of fixed speed booster pumps. Because all control commands are sent out by the “drive”. In the control circuit of the variable speed booster pump, an analog pressure sensor is used in the output manifold and by sending the amount of pressure to the control unit, PLC or DRIVE (VFD), the commands are analyzed and sent out.

Some Drive companies have developed drives with “booster pump” support, such as:

  1. ATV600 Schneider Electric
  2. Ip5a LS
  3. CP2000 DELTA


In this case, PLC is no longer needed and the sensors are connected directly to the drive and the pumps and contactors are commanded directly from the drive. The main feature of variable speed booster pumps is to keep the system pressure constant.


The advantages of variable speed booster pumps can be mentioned as follows:

  1. Increasing the lifespan of pumps
  2. No need for diaphragm tank and jockey pump
  3. Reducing service and maintenance costs
  4. Eliminating the destructive effect of cavitation
  5. Reducing depreciation of couplings and moving parts of the system
